Like I said, back in 2007 I painted a whole series of Lucha Libre paintings. My brain is a mash-up of decades of America’s cultural garbage, and so Sponto was born.

A couple years later my Grandma Max, who was in her 80s at the time, walked by and saw it and said, “That’s a nice Sponto” and just kept walking. I always wondered where she saw another Sponto.
